AAPI groups accuse Haley Barbour of violating their right to free speech

California congresswoman faces accusations of ‘McCarthyism’ from AAPI groups over campaign ads

Two AAPI groups are claiming they are violating their AAPI community’s right to free speech because of a controversial ad campaign on behalf of former Gov. Mitt Romney.

Haley Barbour’s American Unity PAC is targeting Romney in the Virginia Senate GOP primary, one of the closest and most heated races in the country.

Barbour’s group is running ads featuring Romney’s former pastor, the Rev. Richard B. to give the lie to claims that the former Governor is too moderate for the Christian-right community.

But two AAPI organizations are accusing Barbour and her group of violating their right to free speech.

The First Amendment Defense Fund is saying the ad is “McCarthyism” – referring to the witch hunts by communist-era Senator Joseph McCarthy against communists in the United States.

However, the Anti-Defamation League disagrees with the First Amendment Defense Fund’s interpretation of the word McCarthyism.

‘My God, what is being said about this guy? A friend of mine from the U.K. was talking to me about what was going on with the Republicans in Virginia, and she said something to me that shocked me: that they’re essentially saying, “We’re going to destroy you guys!”
