Carmelo Winthrop was just like any other man – except that a photograph of him lying next to a naked girl in the desert had his heart and soul broken when he saw Justin Barbour on the TV.

Carmelo Winthrop was just like any other man – except that a photograph of him lying next to a naked girl in the desert had his heart and soul broken when he saw Justin Barbour on the TV.

A few years before, he would have been at the other end of those camera lenses, having just finished a race and having the most amazing time. But, he had to leave a career that now involved riding the biggest bike on the circuit in the world and trying to keep his hair on once he stepped outside the warm-up area. He had even won an honourable spot in the history books with a historic victory but he was stripped of it. At least, that’s what he thought at first.

“They called me in for an interview after I had won the race and I was like, ‘whoa, what are they talking about? I’ve never won a race before’,” Winthrop told news.com.au this week following a speech he made to the Australian MotoGP fans at the final round of the AMA Superbike Championship held in Phillip Island.

“I had come across the stage with (Michael) Schumacher, he’s a friend of mine, and I had just finished a race and I remember when they called me in they told me I had won the race and when they told me I made sure my shoes were on tight to try and get a little bit of traction so I didn’t crash.”

He was not allowed to forget that it had been a dream come true. The race had come down to the final corner before the final kilometre and Winthrop’s first win was almost enough to convince him that his dream was not just a dream. He had also come close to winning the famous Bathurst 1000 but crashed twice in the lead up to that win.
