“I still have my dreams, I’m still young,” says 25-year-old Italian-Italian Marc Marquez. “It’s a great experience that you can do anything. It’s not just a race. It’s a journey, with hard work.”

Born in Genoa to a father from Valencia who moved the family to the Italian Riviera when he could afford it, Marquez was encouraged at an early age to try motorsport. But instead of focusing on bikes, he began playing rugby at 17 and began learning to drive a car at 20.

“I’m a very, very hard worker,” he claims, adding that he still loves to get up at 7am to go to work in Genoa’s famous Garage de Espec. “People say I’m a fast driver, but I don’t want to be called a fast driver, I want to be called a rider and a person. You are a fast driver if you don’t have anything else to do. I will always work hard.”

But it is not just about the work and hard physical work required to keep a pace with the top MotoGP riders.

“I like to race the hardest, the slowest corners,” he admits. “The most difficult, the most dangerous corners.

“You have to put in a lot of work to be there at the top. I try to be there when my opponents are out of luck.”

Marquez is now in his first season with the Yamaha factory, but it is not just about the engine or the bike, as it is about the team as a whole.
