Selena Gomez cancels ‘Tonight Show’ appearance after contracting COVID-19
LOS ANGELES — U.S. singer Selena Gomez canceled a ‘Tonight Show’ appearance Wednesday following test results showing she had the coronavirus and may not be cleared for the taping.
“I feel healthy. I feel fine,” Gomez told NBC News partner Telemundo, according to a spokeswoman for the network. She added, “I’m not worried about myself. I’m worried about the people around me.”
Gomez’s rep, who declined to be identified, said she was not able to attend the performance Wednesday night before the coronavirus outbreak. The singer’s manager said she had just begun “home quarantine” and would continue to monitor her situation, the New York Post reported.
Gomez — who was set to perform at the Grammys alongside Alicia Keys in February — started her tour six days after being diagnosed with what she called a “really bad cold” on Feb. 22, which she later attributed as a “flu.”
The singer’s representatives said she was cleared for the Oscars broadcast, but she and her management team then faced questions about coronavirus. When asked about her upcoming appearance at the taping of ‘Tonight Show,’ she said, “I can’t. I don’t want to. I have to do what’s best for everybody.”
The singer — who announced last week that she would undergo lung surgery last month — canceled a ‘Tonight Show’ visit in order to wait to be cleared by doctors before resuming shows, according to the New York Post.
“It took a lot of people to get me back on tour and keep my voice in shape. But the doctors, they said, ‘If you can’t sing, you are not going to sing,’” she told Variety magazine.
“So if I could be healthy, I can’t sing,” Gomez said.
The musician also reportedly cancelled a planned appearance at Grammys after meeting with her management team “who said I couldn’t perform because I could spread the virus.”
